Suffield school board approves $34.5 million budget

SUFFIELD — The Board of Education unanimously approved a nearly $34.5 million budget on Monday, which represents a 2.3 percent increase or nearly $800,000 more than the current year’s spending plan.

The budget approved by the board during its meeting at Suffield Middle School was 1.6 percent lower or about $500,000 less than the budget School Superintendent Karen Berasi had originally proposed.

Enrollment for the next school year is projected at 2,277 students, which represents a drop of 49 students over the current year.

Berasi said she is elated that the board accepted a budget she feels will catapult the school system forward.

At $23.2 million, salaries make up 67.4 percent of the budget and represent a 3.15 percent increase or $709,658 more than the current year’s spending.
